WHICH ADAPTER?
MATCH THE TOOL TO THE JOB
How deep do you want to go? Each level does more — and here's the part nobody tells you: what a tool can do depends on the adapter AND the app together, not just the dongle. Buy for where you're headed so you're not re-buying.
1
Generic — the basics
$15–40
Engine and emissions codes, live data, readiness monitors. Clears engine codes on non-gateway vehicles. This is what STEVE reads today.
Tools: Any decent ELM327 — Vgate vLinker, OBDLink LX, Veepeak.
On a gateway vehicle it still reads, but can't clear.
2
All-system read & clear
$100–140
Reads AND clears codes from every module — ABS, airbag/SRS, transmission, body — on a lot of makes. The BlueDriver-style all-rounder.
Tools: BlueDriver, or OBDLink MX+ with its enhanced add-ons. The MX+ is the pick if you want to grow — it also runs the make-specific apps below.
Coverage depth varies by make and model — check yours.
3
Make-specific coding — budget power
same adapter + an app
Same MX+/EX adapter, but a specialist app unlocks deep coding and service functions for one brand on the cheap — DRLs, retrofits, resets.
Tools: FORScan (Ford/Lincoln/Mazda), AlfaOBD (Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram/Fiat/Alfa), OBDeleven or VCDS (VW/Audi), BimmerCode (BMW/Mini). For FORScan, the USB OBDLink EX is the most reliable.
How a capable DIYer codes a single make without a $1,500 tablet.
4
Bidirectional + gateway — pro level
$300–2,000
Active tests, actuations, relearns, coding across all makes, and authorized access through security gateways.
Tools: Autel and Launch are the best value and often match the big names. Snap-on works and is user-friendly but you pay for the badge. Topdon has a growing following — some list FCA AutoAuth built in.
On Stellantis gateway vehicles, add AutoAuth (~$50/yr) on top — see Gateway Access.
💡 STEVE'S TAKE
One good Level 2 adapter that also runs Level 3 apps (the OBDLink MX+) covers most people for years and beats owning three cheap ones. Only step up to Level 4 if you need actuations, relearns, or gateway coding. We don't sell any of these and make nothing on them.

🔐
GATEWAY ACCESS
THE $50 KEY THEY DON'T MENTION
🔧
Here's the deal. Most 2018-and-newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, and Alfa vehicles have a Secure Gateway — a locked door between a scan tool and the truck. It was sold as anti-theft, but it also means your tool can't clear a code or run a routine until it proves it's allowed in.
THE PART NOBODY TELLS YOU
You don't need the dealer to get past that door. There's an official key called AutoAuth. You register, pay about $50 a year, and a compatible scan tool is allowed through the gateway — same legitimate access the dealer uses. It's not a hack and it's not a loophole. It's the front door, and the key costs fifty bucks.
WHY YOU PAY FOR IT
The $50 goes to AutoAuth, who runs the authorization system — not to us. You'll also need a scan tool that supports it. Straight from 20+ years on the tools: Autel and Launch are the best bang for the buck and often work as well or better than the big names. Snap-on is solid and user-friendly, but you're paying for the badge. Topdon has a growing following too. They all get you through the same door — buy what fits your budget.
⚖️ STRAIGHT UP — NO STRINGS
RevResponsible isn't affiliated with AutoAuth and makes zero money if you sign up. No referral kickback, no markup, no upsell. We're telling you because it's your right and the dealer won't.

That P0171 is a lean condition — vacuum leak or dirty MAF. Not dangerous yet but worth addressing. Three times over 80 mph this week is a pattern worth a conversation. 👊
